MEETS • PREPARATION
Race day.
Less confusion. Better support.
Use a simple process before, during, and after the meet so your athlete can focus on competing.
Before the meet
Confirm the athlete is registered before the entry deadline.
Review meet information, location, arrival time, warm-up, and session assignments.
Pack suits, caps, goggles, towels, warm clothing, water, food, and required credentials.
Discuss simple process goals with the athlete; leave technical race instructions to the coach.
During the meet
- Check in or scratch according to meet procedures.
- Help the athlete stay warm, hydrated, fueled, and aware of event numbers.
- Send the athlete to the coach before and after races when directed.
- Volunteer when assigned and respect officials, timers, marshals, competitors, and facility rules.
After the meet
- Focus first on effort, learning, courage, and sportsmanship.
- Avoid conducting a technical debrief in the car.
- Record useful observations and let the athlete recover.
- Review future action items in the team calendar.
