COACH PROTOCOL
Standardized administration
Use one identified 20-meter shuttle audio/version, the same surface and exact course. Record environmental conditions. Athletes run to each line at the signal and turn; pacing becomes progressively faster.- 01
Prepare the course
Measure 20 meters precisely between two clear lines. Add cones, non-slip turning space, run-off area, audio audible to all athletes and trained spotters.

Explain the pace
Athletes must reach the line by the signal, touch or cross it according to the chosen version, turn and wait/run with the next signal. Demonstrate before starting.

Apply one stop rule
Use a clear two-consecutive-miss rule: warn after the first miss; stop after a second consecutive miss. A successful on-time shuttle resets the miss count. Stop immediately for symptoms or voluntary withdrawal.

Record raw performance
Record exact protocol/audio version, completed shuttles, final stage if available, reason for stopping and symptoms. Keep raw performance primary; label any equation-derived aerobic value as an estimate.

- Do not compare results produced by different audio speeds, stage structures or stopping rules.
- Use completed shuttles as the primary field score.
- If an equation is used, name it and label the result estimated aerobic fitness.
- Running economy, turning skill, motivation and surface influence performance.
- Do not merge land-running results with pool threshold or endurance tests.

20-Meter Shuttle Run Test FAQ
Is this a VO2max test?
It is a progressive field performance test. Equations may estimate aerobic fitness, but direct VO2max requires gas analysis.
Can we use any beep-test audio?
No. Different versions may use different speeds and stages. Identify and preserve one version for comparisons.
Why record completed shuttles?
It is the least ambiguous raw performance score and can be interpreted later without losing the original result.
Is this a swimming conditioning score?
No. It describes land-running performance and should remain separate from pool tests.
Stop criteria and scope
Do not test an athlete with illness, fever, chest symptoms, respiratory distress, dizziness, pain, heat stress or a relevant restriction. Stop immediately for concerning symptoms and follow the emergency action plan.
