Three Minute All-Out Swim Test

The 3MT is a continuous, maximal 180-second front-crawl swim. TEAMGOLDUSA uses a consistent in-water push start, 30-second recording points and the final 30 seconds to estimate critical speed.

BEST USED FOR

Who this test serves

Swimmers completing a standardized maximal 180-second front-crawl field test.

PRIMARY OUTPUT

What it measures

Total distance, 30-second distance segments and a field estimate of critical speed from the final 30 seconds.

IMPORTANT LIMIT

What it does not measure

A medical examination, direct laboratory measurement, race prediction or complete description of an athlete’s fitness.

COACH PROTOCOL AT A GLANCE

How to administer the 3MT

  1. Confirm eligibility, explain stop criteria and complete the standardized warm-up.
  2. Use the same pool course, in-water push start, timing method and recording setup.
  3. Start one continuous 180-second maximal front-crawl effort.
  4. Record cumulative distance at every 30-second signal and total distance at 180 seconds.
  5. Calculate final-30-second speed and document all test conditions before comparison.
