Supporting Your Swimmer
Help your child build confidence, independence, enjoyment, and a productive relationship with their coach.
Help the athlete—and the person
Your child should feel supported through a good race, a difficult practice, and a new challenge. Take an interest in the whole experience: friends, learning, school, effort, and enjoyment.
Words you can use today
| Moment | Try saying |
|---|---|
| Before practice | “What are you looking forward to working on?” |
| After practice | “What did you learn? What was fun?” |
| After a race | “I enjoyed watching you swim. Do you want to talk about it?” |
| After disappointment | “That felt difficult. What would help right now?” |
| When setting goals | “What do you want to work toward, and what is one step you can take this week?” |
Your part in the partnership
- Help your swimmer arrive on time with the right gear.
- Notice specific actions: trying a correction, asking a question, or encouraging a teammate.
- Give your swimmer increasing responsibility appropriate to their age and readiness.
- Let the coach guide technical instruction and race review.
- Bring concerns directly to the coach outside active practice; raise urgent safety concerns immediately.
- Make room for school, family life, friendships, and enjoyment.

Questions families ask
Should I compare my child with teammates?
Use your swimmer’s goals and development as the starting point. Teammates can offer encouragement and challenge while athletes learn at different rates.
What if my swimmer seems confused or unhappy?
Listen first and ask what they are experiencing. Arrange a conversation with the coach about the specific concern and a useful next step.
How do I discuss group placement?
Ask what skills and habits the current group is developing and what readiness for the next group looks like. Treat placement as a development plan.
