Times & Standards
Understand swim courses, personal bests, motivational standards, and meet qualification without turning every race into a verdict.
Compare like with like
A useful comparison uses the same event, distance, and pool course. Race times are one measure of progress alongside skills, pacing, confidence, and independence.
The terms that matter
| Term | Plain-language meaning |
|---|---|
| SCY | Short Course Yards: a 25-yard pool. |
| SCM | Short Course Meters: a 25-meter pool. |
| LCM | Long Course Meters: a 50-meter pool. |
| Personal best | A swimmer’s fastest recorded result for that event and course. |
| Seed time | The time submitted with an entry to help arrange the race. |
| Motivational standard | A benchmark for tracking progress; it does not automatically qualify a swimmer for every meet. |
| Qualifying time or cut | A threshold required by a particular meet, subject to its current entry conditions. |
Read a standard in this order
- Choose the correct meet year or season.
- Find the applicable age group and competition category.
- Match the event, distance, stroke, and course.
- Check the meet’s qualifying period, accepted courses, and other entry conditions.
- Ask the coach to confirm the interpretation before submitting an entry.
Official standards and meet documents
USA Swimming publishes motivational and championship standards. Use the current meet announcement for that meet’s eligibility and entry instructions.
Questions families ask
Can we compare a yards time directly with a meters time?
No. They describe different courses. Keep results labeled by course, and use a conversion only when the receiving meet expressly accepts it.
Does a motivational standard guarantee championship eligibility?
No. Motivational benchmarks and a meet’s entry standards serve different purposes. Check the actual championship documents.
What if there is no personal best this weekend?
Review the swim with the coach. Better turns, pacing, or confidence can be useful progress even when the final time is unchanged.
